Characters, animations and expressions

Walk cycles, extra animations, portraits that blink and change expression, and keeping a character the same across scenes.

Animations (looks)

A character can have extra animations from separate files: run, wave, sit, anything. Add them under Animations when the character is selected, or drop files named “name-animation” next to it. Idle, walk, run and talk play by themselves; the Pose beat (and the AI Director) switch to the others by name.

Tip Animations line up with the character's own frame: same size, feet in the same place, even when their frames were drawn bigger or smaller (the list shows “shown at 50%” when one is resized). A frame that's only wider or taller — a sword swing, a jump — keeps its extra room. Untick Match the character's size to keep each animation's own pixel size.

Portraits and expressions

  • Add a portrait image and choose it under Portrait for the character. It shows in the dialogue box when they speak.
  • Add other faces (happy, worried, angry…) under Expressions. A line picks one with its Expression setting.
  • A face named “blink” (or “happy-blink”) makes the portrait blink by itself, at natural random moments.

The same character in every scene

When a character appears in several scenes of a project, changes to its art, animations, portrait, voice and personality apply in all of them. Bring a character from another scene into this one from From your story in the Cast panel.

Other settings

  • Size, which way the artwork faces (so it flips correctly), and which way it starts facing.
  • Voice pitch for the typing blips, and a spoken voice for text-to-speech.
  • Bounce when walking and talking, for single-image art without a walk cycle.
  • Grow/shrink with distance — turn it off for things that fly.
